Bit of an off-beat comment: both Mum and Dad often appeal directly to the reader by looking at them, just as Mum does here. Quite a feat to do that successfully and make readers feel they are part of the scene, great feature in Meggsie.
Two movie actors who did that most successfully are Oliver Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy fame) when he vented his frustration with Stan and, believe it or not, Esther Williams. She threw almost subliminal glances at the camera that helped to make her MGM’s top star and capture young men’s hearts. How do I know? Guess!
