Is that question preceded or succeeded by to never ask a woman her age?

Woman once told the Reader’s Digest that she thought she left her purse on a bus; so she called the transit company and told them. They replied that a driver had found a purse when he got back to the bus depot; she could come there and claim it. I don’t recall how she got there without a car (otherwise, why take the bus) or without any money to get on the bus or hail a cab; but she got there — and found her purse on a table with a large box beside it. Before she could ask why all her stuff was out of her purse, it was explained that they had to inventory the purse when they discovered it in case there was any question about what had been in it. She accepted the explanation without question and started to reload her purse…until she realized that every eye in the depot was staring at her. Without breaking contact with the purse and the box, one of the drivers asked, “Mind if we watch? We tried for an hour to get that stuff back in there and couldn’t get it done.”
