Dress appropriately for the time of year, the paces you might go in the country and the culture of the country. And leave room for possibly buying a few items of clothing in the country. A basic rule I learned was to pick out all the clothes you want to take and lay them on your bed then put all the money you are going to spend in another pile (nowadays it can be just your card). Then take ½ of the clothes and twice the money. You might have to save a bit longer before you go.

The only things I overpack are socks & undies. Those are small items.
