Whoa! The Greeks thought that squirrels used their tails as parasols, and the generic name, to this day— sciuridae— is from Greek skia> “shade” and oura “tail”. Ha ha the joke’s on me. I don’t think they all do that, though. Maybe the typical gray squirrel etc. doesn’t need to take special steps to keep cool.
Recently during a very windy rain storm, a baby squirrel was on the window ledge with his tail covering his body and head. I took a pic, because I thought it was weird!
