Coyotes are rare (perhaps unique) among mammals in that the males are only seasonally interested in mating, not just the females. We turn pink like this to show that we’re ready to…er…answer the call of the wild.
(Fortunately, the male and female cycles coincide. Otherwise there’d be mighty few of us around, as the generations go by.)
