I was nearly sent to Hawaii on short notice a few years back (nearly 5!)… sounds cool at first, but the conditions: 3 weeks on site, 1 week home rotation. We’d work in a client office, not near a beach, and we had restrictions on expenses. The time zone difference of 5 hours behind, the 3 week onsite requirement (no going home unti l), the inability to expense a lot of stuff, and the view each day being a generic office park just like those on the mainland made that assignment far less desirable… thank God it fell through and no one went…
My employer sent a Jamaican to the arctic with, apparently little more than ear muffs, as he lost half his fingers to frostbite. He told me his hands were very painful, but then the pain went away. He thought that was a good thing.
A Corporation that I worked for sent me (on short notice) to Tahiti to train new hires and assist in opening a new resort/hotel property. On first blush, this seemed ideal, what could be better than romantic Tahiti, a tropical paradise, the perfect place to escape the freezing U.S. winter ?
Long story short, I virtually never saw the outside of the hotel property and the rare times I had a day off, it poured like the hammers of hell – it was monsoon season there !
It was a gorgeous, sunny day when I arrived and when I flew out.

Better bring a wetsuit. Not so much there to stand on any more.
