    There is a Shakespearean quote which seems apt:“What’s past is prologue”from The Tempest.

    Going all psychological: What happened in the past to make Jane think/feel coming out would not be warmly received?

    Understanding = Affinity + Reality + Communications. If the legs are not big and equal, the triangle collapses, and the fire goes out.
