I remember in January, 1969, landing near Saigon and being on a bus driving through Camp Alpha to the Caribou that would be flying us to Dong Tam. I saw something running from under one hooch to another and thought, “That is the weirdest dog I ever saw.” Then I realized that it was a rat. The body was about as big around as both of my fists together, and the tail was about 18 inches long. My first day in Vietnam.

Of many disturbing Kliban images, this may be the most disturbing. Visceral. (Um, now I wish I hadn’t said “visceral”.)
