Lots of other words come to mind, but “foreigner” generally isn’t on the list, that’s true.

Having been born in Japan in 1948, I was guilty of saying “gaijin” a few times myself, when I spotted a foreigner I didn’t know.

Karl is sort of correct. I had a Korean-American friend who was called why too many unkind things. And of course, when December 7th rolled around, he was somehow blamed for Pearl Harbor. I would think that non-Asians would stand out a lot more in Japan then do Asians in America.

When I visited Japan, I proudly pointed to myself and declared “Gaijin”.

It could be worse.I used to know a guy who loved taking trips to Japan and wandering through the smaller towns where few tourists ever venture. He was tall, skinny and had shoulder length, pale blond hair. One day, he walked around a corner and a little boy, about 4 or 5, took one look at him and Ran back to his mother screaming “Oni, Oni, Oni…”.
