Little Nemo by Winsor McCay for October 23, 2014

I had a pretty vivid imagination at age 6 myself but this stuff would’ve given me nightmares if I’d read it at that age. There was a Boy’s Life from 1968 or so with a cover story about ghosts and even though I turned 9 that year that cover gave me the willies for weeks.

I find myself reading this strip just to see what Nemo ate just before bedtime.

McCay knows how to tell a story. This is how people were entertained before tv, movie or radios.

Dang Nemo! Keep it in yer p.j.’s!

The richness and subtlety of the art is unparalleled today. And the imagination is one fueled by a life lived richly, not one absorbed by pathetic electronic media. Sigh.
