Soon I’ll have to put HER dog down. “But he’s happy. He’s healthy. Look he ate half his food.” I feel sorrier for my 10 year old going on 55 than I do for the canine. Anyone have some magic pills. For her, not the dog.Should I immediately buy a replacement (better yet adopt from the shelter? Would that be like Lisa Simpsons Snowball I, II, III, IV? Why didn’t people come with instruction manuals?
@Lewreader Sorry to hear that – if people were simple enough, there would be an instruction manual. Some people do better with some time to grieve before they adopt another pet. Listen to your daughter, and try to read between the lines to see what’s best for her.
I’m not sure if he’s innocent, just plain dumb, or willfully ignorant. “Innocent” doesn’t really cover when he was using Tortoise as a life raft without noticing he was half-drowned.Lewreader: I’m sorry to hear that. I don’t think there’s any way to make it easier. My last dog had to be put down last year and it wasn’t any easier than when we had to put my first dog down 14 years before that. We had said “No more dogs, it hurts too much!” but started looking right after she died and found a puppy that had been born on the same day. It did help to have a new pup… I think the best way would be to have two dogs, spaced out enough in age that there’s less risk of losing both of them at once. But a lot of people can only comfortably afford one dog at a time. Unfortunately I’m not in a position where I can have another dog right now.
I really hope they don’t let Little Dog be “lost” that way, but I’m kinda scared they’re going to. It would make a big statement about the many flesh-and-blood pets who are put down every day. I just don’t know if I could stand to re-read the strip after that, though.
