Even in the 1970’s you couldn’t find a bike helmet because they weren’t made. Around 1975 Bicycling magazine recommend a Hockey helmet for serious cyclists.

It’s wise to wear a helmet. It’s also wise if you’re going to ride your bike or walk at night to wear light clothing so motorists can see you. Too many people are wearing dark clothing and it’s hard to see them, this is dangerous.

@Lamberger:Nanny-state indeed. My Harley-drivin’ neighbor’s funeral is tomorrow. He T-boned some kid that pulled out in front of him around dusk “I don’t need no dam lights or a helmet, the noise of my ‘pipes’ is enough” attitude..Yeh, Right. At least the neighborhood is quiet now.

OBTW; I quit bikin’ after 54 years. Only one go-down..Oil slick in the rain. I figgered I was pushing it, what with the stoops that populate the roads today.
