I know a woman who has done that every Christmas for her cats (she’s had many through the years) as well as on their birthdays. It’s always seemed a bit illogical to me, since the cats don’t understand the meaning of it.
Christmas time I wrap our dog’s present. Our Lhasa figured it out fast and enjoyed the game – it’s taken our Westie a few Christmas’s but he finally got the idea.
Seriously? Just do what we do when we decide to wrap gifts for ferrets. Just wrap it in crinkly tissue paper. Then that becomes a toy, too. No human intervention needed.

Don’t laugh! I know folks that actually wrap Christmas presents for their dogs.
