Heartbeats…. Picking up pace… Quiet focus upon a thundering in an ocean of stillness ….. as words rush through like a sudden, stiffening breeze…words that land softly, but tread with force upon a world that suddenly changes… – An unexpected moment of electric touch in the delivery of a reprise….. Or the bittersweet symphony of a swan song, whispered……

Even that ailing French Lace floribunda (although I continue to cut them off in order to direct the plant to produce leaves and not flowers. It is beginning to grow outward, a positive step!). The new Bleeding Hearts that I planted about a month ago are growing and blooming, My Red Carpet Border Lilies Really outdid themselves this year as did some of my Iris (some didn’t bloom for whatever reason. I get them from a reputable company, so I was surprised. Oh, well, at least they are growing, anyway! I have a lot of yardwork to do tomorrow, but I get to feast on my Shasta daisies blooming along with fire-engine red Phlox in a wine barrel (I also have Black-eyed Susans mixed in with the daisies). So there is Gunther as happy as his mother, and now for the moment of heartbreak. ~So in two weeks there will be the big goodbye, followed by a week of reliving the memories in his head, and then a week of really missing her. Then, “Mom, I really like your hugs, but I’m missing the hugs of someone else, and she is in Peru.” ~Then will be Mom’s tears because “no decent boy goes away to his girlfriend when they aren’t even married.” “I’m not going to pay your airfare.” “If you go, you’re out for good. You’re not going to live here again. I won’t let you.” “Don’t you dare take one thing out of this house because everything in it is mine because this is my property and whatever is on my property is mine.” “I’m going to the grocery store. I will be home in 30 minutes. Before I get home, I want you to wash the whites and hang them on the line, and you have the towels washing by the time I come back. Also, take out the trash while I’m gone. I know you already took it out this morning, but there’s more.” ~ One year later Gunther will say, “Mom, you have taken a whole year out of my life when I could have been in Peru.” ~ Another year goes by and another before Gunther finds a way out, but by then Rosa is married and has a child. ~Then Gunther will say, “Mom, living with you was like living in a prison, and the memories come flooding back every time I walk through your front door.”

" If Rosa truly wanted him to come, you think she would have told him about “Plan C” when she was considering it a long time ago."^I understand your point, but in the strip I posted above, she took the time to ask (even in a soft way) if he’d go with her…. she didn’t ask late because she didn’t want him with her, she asked late because she knows that he’s not the “spontaneous, seize the day” type.. at least he wasn’t …. he has changed that just a bit… but now is a crucial time to see if he’s changed a bit more ……

Isn’t Quill going to be living at Moony in a dorm?

I don’t recall if his freshman housing was ever mentioned or established. Even so, he could always change his mind, if it gives Gunth a chance to “go forth.”

I wouldn’t necessarily say following your high school GF to another country to follow her dream instead of getting your college degree is the “right thing” to do. It certainly is a thing to do, and worth doing if that’s your goal in life, but it’s certainly never been Gunther’s goal.

It’s the “right thing to do” in re: getting Gunther out of the house and onto a new life…. and, maybe… just maybe… entertain some new goals not previously considered.

All we know is that Gunther is set to go to Moony Uni. But we don’t know his housing arrangements, either. I suspect he’d still want to stay at home and look after his mother while attending classes there. Is he condemned to that house for the rest of his life? He has a potential opportunity now to go out and explore. Perhaps it wasn’t his goal, historically, because he saw no means to achieve it. Now, with Rosa, and with help (maybe) from Quill and Ms. B, he has those means, and the opportunity…. Hopefully, he’ll now have the “motive.” To waist them would be a “crime,” no??? :-)

My opinions:++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Gunther going to Peru for any LONG TERM timeframe is utterly preposterous. Gunther going to Peru for a brief (most likely a week or two, the longest might be for the Summer) visit is still in my opinion more UNLIKELY than likely. I think Gunther will be at Mooney this Fall. He is too integral a character to dispose of.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++As for Rosa, I suspect she will head to Peru for a spell… in effect be written out of the picture for a while…. perhaps a year or two… while the comic focuses more on the core central characters in their initial adaptations to college. Then, perhaps when the group reaches their Sophomore or Junior years in college (time frame for this to occur in the comic…. who the hell knows) then, THEN Rosa may show up again, back from Peru, perusing her college education at that point.

    Nothing is set in stone.

Roger that. In fact, I’m counting on it.

I think that Gunther could apply to Yale too. If he goes to Peru with her he’ll go anywhere to be with her, and her with him.

He’ll have to come up with some major $$$ to attend, though. Maybe he can get some kind of scholarship $$$ or something. But yes, he could attend after returning from Peru.

I guess it depends on what the plans are for Lu and whether or not Lu and Gunth are destined for each other, eventually. Like I’ve said, it doesn’t have to be immediate…. Lu and Gunth could (and should) go through a few relationships (if only for training/practice) before trying to make a go of it themselves.

The Gunther- Luann pairing never made sense to me. Gunther is a brainiac. I don’t think he’d be happy, in the long run, with someone who isn’t his intellectual match.-Luann’s interests are varied (acting, song writing, singing, taking care of kids, falling in and out of love), but are not oriented towards the academic sphere. -I think they would end up boring each other, in the long run…

Why Gunther should not go to Peru:

    (1) He’s probably never been outside of Pitt, much less outside of the USA, so he doesn’t have a passport.

    (2) We have no reason to believe he even speaks Spanish, much less is fluent in it.

    (3) This is a guy to whom a major adventure is walking across an open field, not going to South America.

    (4) Who would bring him his plate of cookies and milk at bedtime every night?

    (5) Peru is Rosa’s ambition, not his, so why should be pursue it?

    (6) Mooney Uni is his ambition, so why should he forego it?

    (7) If he is not interested enough in Rosa to kiss her more than once a year, he’s certainly no interested in her enough to follow her to another continent.

    (8) There are probably other girls at Mooney Uni who are better matches for Gunther. Shy types for whom one kiss a year is just what they want. Domestic types who enjoy sewing and would enjoy preparing plates of cookies and milk. Weird girls who wear plaid all the time, except for when they stroll around naked in the library.
