She means well. She’s young and learning like most people. I wish some people would think before they comment. So many unkind comments in this particular strip

New Ager to the nth degree…
wiselad almost 10 years ago
the zooidal was actually funny in the fun way and looks like Bern’s face when she hears one of the typical angst moments of Luann
Argythree almost 10 years ago
I don’t see anything about Bernice that suggests that any part of her (‘zooidal spirit’ or anything else) is beaming. Too me, she looks like one of the kids who walked into our crisis switchboard years ago to confess that he had tried to kill himself, but couldn’t even succeed at that…
ShagsCA almost 10 years ago
Dez, you are a duck. A very fupped duck.
Argythree almost 10 years ago
I haven’t been reading that long, but I’ve never seen Bernice’s mother or read any posts about her. So she would have to be introduced first for Bernice to start yelling at her.-I am seriously concerned that Bernice is reaching the end of her endurance. Too much ‘difference’ too fast can be more than some folks can handle.
Argythree almost 10 years ago
What looks like ‘doormat’ behavior can be a sign of depression…

Hope this comic stays with Bernice. Had enough of Gunter. Hope Luann comes to help Bernice with her room mate.Greg Evans the name of this cartooin is Luann. Were is Luann??
Argythree almost 10 years ago
Seeing the back of a character’s head is the equivalent of seeing the other high school students as silhouettes. They are only there as kind of a place marker to let readers know that others are part of the story only marginally. We see Mrs. Berger actually interacting with Gunther, so even though we disapprove of his yelling at her, we understand some of his anguish at being treated like he is still in grade school. But if all we get of a character is the back of their head, there’s no context to understand why they would suddenly be yelled at.-If anything, I’d expect a tearful Bernice to call her mother and ask if she could move home…

Bernice, want to come hide under Luann’s bed until all these people go away? Heaven knows you practically lived in her bedroom for years already …

Before Dez made her actual, she could have gone either way. She could have been the Greatest! Roomie! Ever! or the roommate from Hell.Right now, it’s beginning to look like, “Abandon hope, all ye who enter this dorm-room.”

That zooidal spirit reminds me of mad gargoyles on European medieval cathedrals.

That’s, err, a cute trinket/hair decoration by Viper, who must be quite an, err, artist…Bernice is relieved the bag wasn’t filled with ganja or other drugs, but (rightly) doesn’t know how to react to the colorful bird/insect hair thing…. Despite what Dez said or thinks, this dorm room is not in balance, not yet!

Dez is a glaring contradiction in terms…She thinks she is so “together” and with it, but Dez is one of the most lost characters ever in this strip.

Man, people are being awfully judgmental of a person who is just a free spirit. Back when I was young, those of us who were more “square” often looked up to and wished we could be more like that. Some of us tried and failed, others, like me, tended to appreciate those free spirits even though I knew I would not naturally have that sort of ability myself. Dez is so far, a real breath of fresh air. I enjoy her greatly. Bernice, although a bit hesitant, is not being overly judgmental… she is being open to learning and seeing about Dez… which is a good thing. I think the two of them could have a very useful time learning a lot from each other.
Doctor Go almost 10 years ago
Okay Bern, time to change roommates and move in with Tiffany. At least Tiff’s normal – relatively speaking.
aisforamy almost 10 years ago
If Bernice is going into social work, she is going to meet and work with a lot of liberal free spirits. She should start getting used to it now, and Dez will be perfect for that experience!
Jelfring Premium Member almost 10 years ago
I also like Dez and don’t understand so much harsh judgement. I think Bernice is open-minded enough to see what she can learn from someone so different.
duffer37 almost 10 years ago
This storyline is tiresome. If it continues past this weekend, I’m dumping the comic from my reading list.
stonegarden almost 10 years ago
I think Dez is a sweetie! She took time from her classes to help her ailing grandpa, and helps out other friends in need. She even bought a token of gratitude for Bernice, for her part in helping, and got it from her artist friend Viper, supporting her creations. I think this is about Bernice learning about people different from what she is used to, and not being judgemental about it. That would be a bad trait for a guidance counselor. There is nothing wrong with Dez or her friends.
usafmsgt almost 10 years ago

Bernice would have taken it no matter what it was. She would be a terrible counselor, she can’t say NO.
locake almost 10 years ago
Dez is free to believe in whatever she wants to. Her problem is forcing it on someone else who doesn’t want it. Dez is pushy and self-centered. If she is so intuitive she would pick up on Bernice’s reluctance.
Willow Mt Lyon almost 10 years ago
Okay. That is the final straw. New living arrangements for Bernice is needed immediately.
dougsathome almost 10 years ago
At least it isn’t something she’d have to eat… or IS it?
Argy.Bargy2 almost 10 years ago
You did not ‘enjoy the ride’ when someone imitated your identity and posted on this site. Why should I ‘enjoy the ride’ when someone disses a female character by describing her as beady eyed and potato-nosed?
Argy.Bargy2 almost 10 years ago
I believe it is an insult to real human beings (women and men) to describe anyone (cartoon or not) as ’beady-eyed and potato-nosed). I have the same right to interpret words as an insult that you do.
Argy.Bargy2 almost 10 years ago
I sympathize with Bernice on behalf of all of those who remember what it’s like to just want to live your life, and not have to be scolded into accepting someone changing all the contents of the place where you live, handing you drinks you don’t want and things you don’t want to wear, or else you’re condemned as some kind of narrow-minded fuddy duddy.

Camawn, Greg, you can do better than that hair thingie.

Bernice is starting to see that this could be a good thing.
Dreamdeer almost 10 years ago
I LIKE Dez! She’s an original, a free spirit like Knute and Crystal. Everything she’s said and done has been kind in intention, even if misdirected. I predict that she’s going to be Bernice’s Peru—the experience that compels Bernice to grow beyond her narrow comfort-zone and widen her horizons. Once Bernice catches up with Gunther (with help from Dez) they will be perfect for each other.
Dreamdeer almost 10 years ago
Ferrets aren’t illegal in many states. We don’t know where Moony Uni actually is.
ACTIVIST1234 almost 10 years ago
“perhaps Dez will offer an opinion about that, should Gunther stop by Bernice’s dorm room at some future time "*Dave- I’d lile to see that. Even more, I’d love to hear what Gunther would now advise Bern about changing and growing.

Remember that that hair ornament apparently cost Dez $50. So what Dez is saying, “I want you to be my friend too, to be part of our group. In fact, I’ll invest significant time & money in you.”*Has Lu ever invested that much time & money in Bern?

the large percentage of psychologists and psychiatrists, sociologists, common sensors -or whatever you wish to name them, that comment on this strip over the last few weeks has been highly entertaining from my perspective. -thanks for a great study in internet sociological interaction. -as i’ve said before on other strips – i often wonder if the cartoonists gets paid by the number of comments put on their strip. and possibly double pay for those who don’t like or want the cartoonists to continue their theme in the way they are. -AND PLEASE i know they don’t but it might be an interesting experiment to see which cartoonists and their strip that comes out on top.

Reallybad2, Dez is not a villian. She is a bit of a flake, albiet an inconsiderate one. And since when are ferrets illegal? Some of my freinds own some, that they purchased perfectly legally. They don’t make good pets, though.
wiselad almost 10 years ago
first, Dez assumes a lot, but that does not make her a bully, she has not gotten any signals from Bern that she does not want what Dez assumes Bern likes, and actually besides the “what the heck is this” vibes, we readers have never gotten the “I hate this” vibe from Bern………second…………IF………… Bern decides (actually Greg ;P )to not have Dez as a rooommate, the most logical new choice would be Tiffany, Luann most probably would not transfer to moony until she becomes a Junior
RSH almost 10 years ago
Bernice is almost smiling. I’d like to think that she is as relieved as the rest of us (commentators) that all these little brown paper bags did not contain pot or other drugs but innocent things like tea or some hand made art object. Dez is making sure that Bernice doesn’t feel like a doormat taking care of things for other students. So far Dez is a caring nice person not some self centered druggie.

“Ferrets are not illegal everywhere.”-“They are illegal in California, where this college is located.”.Come now, there is no town named Pitts in California. .It is in an equally imaginary state, perhaps Pittsylvania.

“Bernice knocked herself out and stopped breathing while playing volleyball. Luann gave her CPR, and it is suggested it saved her life.”’Luann saved Tifany from drowning and got ZERO thanks for it from Tif.

How presumptuous! The Muppet hat or barette thing Bernice would choose to suit her personality would look much more like a butterfly than that! Get to know her better, lest you make the wrong kind of Muppet hat or barette thing, Viper! Obviously!
doverdan almost 10 years ago
Yes, we see California reflected, but that is only part of the picture. There seems, IMO, no attempt to button down the “actual” location of the Luann story..I doubt that you believe that some real person named Brad actually went to that California restaurant. .Both are fictional, the comic strip person and the comic strip restaurant.
doverdan almost 10 years ago
“They use the Los Angeles airport.”.No, no, no. The airport you see at Pittsville may look like LAX, but it cannot be the same place. It is a significant flight away..Recall that Tiff and Quill flew from the Pittsville airport to LA (her Hollywood trip) by plane. The flight was long enough for Tiff to annoy Quill with her flirting.
doverdan almost 10 years ago
No one has mentioned the use here of the word ‘zooidal’ which seems odd at best. It has nothing to do with the zodiac..DICTIONARYzooidal = of or pertaining to a zooid..zooid =(biology) An organic body or cell having locomotion, as a spermatic cell or spermatozoid.(zoology) An animal in one of its inferior or early stages of development, as one of the intermediate forms in alternate generation.(zoology) One of the individual animals in a composite group, as of Anthozoa, Hydrozoa, and Bryozoa; — sometimes restricted to those individuals in which the mouth and digestive organs are not developed..Can anyone make sense of this? Is that a caricature of a spermatic cell depicted on Bern’s head? Or is Dez just tongue-tied?

technically, the closest airports to Greg’s place that have international flights are San Diego(about 45 minutes) , Ontario about 90 minutes, John Wayne airport in Santa Ana about 65 minutes away, Long Beach about 85 minutes away, even Palm Springs(called international because a few flights to Canada) is slightly closer than LAX
wiselad almost 10 years ago
Los angeles airport is about 2 hours away BTW

There’s a town called Pittsburg (no final ‘h’) somewhere near Livermore, CA, methinks. But then the gang would fly out of SFO.
RSH almost 10 years ago
wouldn’t it be interesting if Dez turned out to be a math or physical science major. People would stop writing her off as a flake; surfaces can be deceiving. At least we can be sure that she is working toward a degree. Let’s give this woman a break until we have some reason not to.
wiselad almost 10 years ago
BTW, taking it that Pittsville (fictional) was same area as San Marcos, makes more sense(time wise) to drive directly to LAX than take a nonstop flight to Sidney than to go to San Diego, Santa Ana or Ontario for a one stop flight to Sidney (some flights going to San Francisco, or to Salt lake) but money wise(flights around same price and adding gasoline cost to drive to the airports) it makes more sense to go to San Diego
wiselad almost 10 years ago
if the bag service includes panda dung brought from the zoo, and that Dez grows her own tea………….. plus the price is a combination of using panda dung and the exact tea, some of the Panda dung teas go as “cheap” as 80 bucks…….. and the 50 dollars she owes to Piro might be “per bag” or might be per week or per month
Oceanic almost 10 years ago
It could have been just some fancy incense or tea, but without knowing exactly what, I think we can rest safe in the sensible nature of Bernice. B figures whatever this freaky chick thinks is a cool gift is likely not something she’s going to be really into…

“zooidal” : of or pertaining to a zooid. “zooid” : an animal arising from another by budding or division; one of the distinct individuals of a colonial invertebrate animal, such as a bryozoan, that arise asexually by budding.
strange choice of words on Greg’s part..
RSH almost 10 years ago
I guess with that little creature on Bern’s head, she looks like she’s budding… OK I get it now.. her spiritual self is budding.
wiselad almost 10 years ago
zooidal spirit as in a representation of the “connector” of YOU with the PLANET SPIRIT that has a separate conscious than you but it is still part of you, supposedly the more you allow it to be part of your life, the happier you are……………. for many it is basically the form to show our 2 choices in life, to be guided by the desires of our soul(closer to God) or to that of the Animal (the instinct of survival and dominance over others), of feeling happiness through the giving or through taking, being unselfish or selfish, choice of happy with the things we have or sadness for things we don’t have

What is Dez doing in college, anyway? Everything she wants to learn could be taught by a shaman, witch doctor, or Voodoo instructor. The price per credit hour would be less and she wouldn’t take up space better used by someone hoping to learn something productive. I mean, come on, what good is majoring in Primitive Culture and practices? About as useful as psychology, sociology, philosophy. English Literature, and fine arts. Bernice will sink to the culture level of Dez before Dez rises to Bernice’s standards, so get ready for a barefoot Bernice beating on bongo drums.

I heard about Leonard Nimoy earlier thismorning when I was between service calls. Hard to believe he was 83. Spock, Scotty and Bones are probably having a Romulan ale together tonight. Perhaps, Khan, too…

Yes so many. For “Gilligan’s Island” now only Ginger and Mary Ann survive. One lonely island. We lost the Professor last week.
Perhaps, you meant “last year…” (01/16/2014).
Yep. Tina Louise and Dawn Wells are the last survivors. And, most unfortunately, they can’t stand each other. So definitely no tributes to come there.
It made me think about “Hogan’s Heroes,” again. The only regular (or even semi-regular) surviving cast member now is Robert Clary (Le Beau). Quite an accomplishment, as he was also a Holocaust survivor. Much of his family were not so fortunate.

another series of that time that we already starting to lose some (but we still have a lot alive) is MI, we already lost the second leader(Graves, as during the 1st 2 seasons we had someone else), Morris(most episodes) and now Nimoy(he went there after Star Trek)
