Hmm. Almost sounds like my wedding, only I got 50 stacks of dishes….

I’m grateful for the invention of gift cards. Used to think it meant I was too lazy to put my effort into a gift, but lately the registration lists either have too many things I can’t afford, or a lot of things that look like they were clicked on by mistake…

I know Brad and Toni are the ones getting married, but for whom are they shopping? (Fun and easy, huh?)

As I had just explained on yesterday’s, ArcaMax is based in Arlington Va., in Eastern Standard. GoComics is based in KC, Missouri, on Central Standard. Therefore, KC releases at 1 AM, which is relative to the Midnight time (an hour’s difference) in the east, and relative to the 10 PM time in the west. ArcaMax, again being based in the east, releases at midnight. – Though GoComics is the distributor, sites like ArcaMax are licensed to be able to release the strip (as is acknowledged in the copyright info. at the Arcamax site), as is a few others like Yahoo and certain Newspapers that release on their own website. So the time difference is only due to logistics/time zones.

Once – only once – I found the perfect gift in a store. I went to the clerk to buy it. She said, “There’s no price on it – I can’t sell it to you.”. I asked for the manager – who seemed like a temp – she backed the clerk. So I wound up buying something else that I don’t think my friends liked – I never heard anything. The moral of the story: “You can’t win.”
JayBluE about 9 years ago
The reason that I wrote it that way, was because we had actually just answered it minutes before the new day’s strip, here. And as many have the practice of checking for late comments from the previous strip, and because the original commenter asking the question had also just posted the question minutes before the new strip for today, it seemed to me that they would have already seen the answers provided. ,so I was relating that fact in my response to you, as it could have been that you didn’t see those responses (though you also are one to have checked for previous responses from the prior strips). – And I don’t know what you’re looking at, with Iowa, because Uclick/Gocomics is in KC.

Ok, everyone who lives in a state affected by Daylight Saving, it officially reverted back. So don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour before you head for a long fall night nap (not you folks in Arizona, Hawaii and American Samoa…)
JayBluE about 9 years ago
“If that really is the case, that’s just bad business.”^Again, Uclick is the distribution portal, so they’re already doing good business (numbers wise) in distributing to the other places/sites (which is part of the purpose of a distribution syndicate). Secondly, there is the fact that people clicking on there (ArcaMax) doesn’t hinder Uclick/Gocomics, as many from here “moonlight” over there, and vice versa. The numbers (site hits, etc.) tell a different story from one saying that they have a “bad model”. So though many see it there (again, because of the "EST/Central time difference) first, they also will see it here, and that’s what counts to everyone concerned.

The direct website lists KC, Missouri as it’s physical address (and as is usually the case, would be better to get it straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak, than some “other” website/listing), by clicking on the appropriate contact link. (http://www.universaluclick.com/contact)

“Office buildings have nothing to do with server locations, assuming the servers are in KC”^And where do remote servers, etc. get the “go ahead”? From the “head honcho server”. In KC.

“Again, that is just a theory that we both seemed to have about time zones playing in to why they’re an hour late, but regardless, it’s something they should look into."^Yeah, ok. – “…and they still don’t have a mobile-friendly commenting system…”^Gocomics started as a mobile site. - Plus, if you use your mobile phone, all you have to do is switch to the desktop version of the site, and you can comment and enjoy the same functions as you would on a computer (minus a couple of differences, depending on your personal device). Perhaps this is “just my opinion”, but it seems you decided to give a fictional character a break, to start criticizing something else.

Funny thing is, we had just found our old crock pot at my MIL’s, not too long ago. It was like “saving money in the bank”. Or more like “that ten dollar bill you forgot you stashed in the cookie tin”…

Whoaaaaaaa, SAVE Your MONEY, Brad and Toni-Roni!

I received an invitation once where the bride and groom specifically asked for gift cards from certain stores – easy, peezy. They were all big box stores, local hardware store; made it pretty easy.
dlkrueger33 about 9 years ago
I’m Italian….they just give money. As a matter of fact, in our very family everyone actually used a silk/satin money bag. At the reception, the bride walks around greeting the guests and those guests slip a check into the bag she’s holding. Worked for me.
Sisyphos about 9 years ago
I can’t imagine for whom Toni and Brad are shopping. But, in any case, “bridal registries” have become way too formalized. I tend to agree that cash gifts are the way to go, even if they may seem a bit crass to some….
Airman about 9 years ago
A shopping “date”: Proof that a relationship has moved into the doldrums stage. So incredibly boring and painful, when finding a mens’ room is the highlight of the outing. Toni should take him to Victoria’s Secret and model some things for him.

Gift cards are the best for any occasion. If you don’t want to give cash or a gift and you’re opposed to gift cards that force the giftee to shop at a particular store, you can buy Visa gift cards these days. Then they can shop almost anywhere.
notinksanymore about 9 years ago
It bugs me that she’s rejecting gifts because she doesn’t like them. It isn’t for you, you don’t have to like the color/pattern! Somebody forgot the purpose of gift giving.

Arcamax / GoComics / Yahoo – it is all immaterial as long as the comics are posted daily! Have a good day,
kenhense about 9 years ago
@JPuzzleWhiz: the item was a towel set – really cool design – I had never seen. Other designs there were around $100. I could have spent all day looking at other stores – unlikely to have found it.
bookworm0812 about 9 years ago
Well, I don’t like the idea of gift registries anyway, BUT, if Brad and Toni are looking at the registry, it sounds like they’re simply not buying the first couple of things just because THEY don’t like them. You’re not buying them for yourselves, guys. If the new couple wants ugly, then buy them ugly!
spaced man spliff about 9 years ago
at Polish weddings in my hometown area, the new bride wore an apron with lots of pockets, and during the “dance with the bride” at the reception, it was customary to stuff money or checks into the pockets.-Italian weddings do that too.

Candy Update: I found peanut butter kisses on a hidden shelf in Dollar General Saturday. If you too want some, they may be half price today. (No trick-or—treaters, so I’ve got two bags to enjoy.)

Gift cards always seemed as tacky & lazy as money in an envelope. So I’d buy things they returned for the cash. Gift cards now have become a thought ful give— and so pretty, too! (?)
Caldonia about 9 years ago
The gift is for THEM. Doesn’t make sense to not go ahead and buy them what they want.

When I was in college a couple friends of mine got married, he graduated the year before and went out west to get a good job and set up a house for himself and his future bride. His bride graduated a year later and since all their mutual friends were in college they got married at the church they’d attended during school. Since he only had a small car and they didn’t have money to rent a trailer for the move back west and the car was already filled with the two of them and her “necesaties” so they didn’t have much room for wedding gifts. For my part I decided to get them a gift certificate (this was before gift cards) for a national store chain. The gift certificate didn’t take up any room and once they got settled in their new home they knew what they needed and were able to use it to pick up what they needed without carting it across half the country.
Jim Kerner about 9 years ago
OK. How do you get it?
Jim Kerner about 9 years ago
I just realized that they ended up at the gift card section. That’s why it was fun and easy.

“yup, if they don’t have a bar code to scan”^Indeed… the dreaded “PLU” system. And also the UPC system. It’s what makes it easier to order items during the weekly /monthly inventory, as all you have to do is log into the store system and use the codes. In turn, when they ring up the item at the register, your company makes money, and it trickles all the way down to your individual apartment. It’s also how they determine what items go on sale, depending on the deal they may have with the manufacturers and the brands carried. But the drawback is still that very thing that kenhense and you are referring to- it can’t leave the store without being “computerized and accounted for”. I used to work in seafood at a major grocery chain, and everything was counted by PLUs and UPCs. – Many times we knew how much the item was, but the cashier depended on all the departments having the items to scan. Putting that barcode sticker on was the key to everything, including the store manager being able to determine how many hours each of us clerks in that particular department could work. All the sales figures and tracking of what items sells the most as well as whether or not our department was “worth the amount of staff/hours” was all tied to that number….
JayBluE about 9 years ago
“which is why I highly suggest that GoComics put their comics up when other sites do”^But it’s physically impossible to do that. They are not in the same time zone as ArcaMax, They’d have to release it at 11 pm to put it out before ArcaMax (at midnight). But then that means that the next day’s strip would be released a day early, and would also run against the the other sites that they have “good faith” deals with. The strip that’s dated for today (11/1) would have to have been released on 10/31, and that means that all the cartoonists would be caught up in a whole mess of scheduling problems. – Not to mention that it’s only substituting one early time for the other. Since the comics are licensed to the other sites, it means that one has to be earlier than the others, unless they all are based in the same time zones. Since Gocomics makes money in distributing it to the other sites, they would be undermining their own sales and would lose the other sites that they do business with. – The model may not seem perfect, but it’s been working for all this time. – Plus, you can just as easily click on this site as you can click on the other sites. – And, too- Remember when you gave out the link for the strip on Yahoo, when this site was down for maintenance? Was it “loyal” then, to do that? So see? There is no problem here. The numbers bear that out, every day. And the system (as it is) has been working for everybody, involved.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
“Me, I like to get a good night’s sleep before I view the day’s comics, so I come here. After all, this is where all the good people are! ;o)”^But many of them “moonlight” on both sites, so there is a chance that you have run across someone here that you read the comments of, that are also on there. Not just in considering Luann, but some of the other strips, too…
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Oh, yeah.. and aren’t you the one who always commented on how the other site’s commenters were “more in tune to honest criticism” than here on GoComics?
JayBluE about 9 years ago
No, I mean you said “where all the good people are”, but many of those “good people” are over there, as well…
JayBluE about 9 years ago
That’s the thing- there can be servers in different time zones, but the main server is still going to be in the one central location. Or the “go ahead” to send it to the other servers would still be coming from a central location.
Argythree about 9 years ago
SPOILER ALERT
Luann is ‘rewarded’ for her so-called maturity’ in putting everyone else’s plans ahead of her own. Not that she sees this as much of a reward…
Predictable, to me, in the downward progression of her relationship with Quill…
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Spoiler Alert….Luann makes a face. err…well, I can’t show it, but trust me- it’ll be her face…

Now we know why Brad & Toni disagree about everything — Toni disagrees with EVERYONE about everything.
Kymberleigh about 9 years ago
*Everyone else is releasing a day early (according to Central Time). The server’s location means absolutely nothing when it comes to when they can release. Otherwise they could move their servers to Europe and release way ahead of everyone. Unless they’re purposely giving those sites a head start, this is more than likely an oversight. *
That’s why I, living in Los Angeles, can read my favorite GoComic strips two hours before the day “officially” starts, and Comics Kingdom an hour before that. If King Features doesn’t care that the west coast gets each day’s comics at 9:00pm local time, why should UClick?

Gift cards are just tacky pieces of plastic that restrict purchases to a particular store or group of stores. Cash is best if you can’t afford a specific item on the list. Or pooling money together for one big purchase with mutual friends.
