Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for November 24, 2015
Transcript:
Luann: Pru's here to help with the grand opening! Not to steal Quill. Bernice: Why would she drive all the way here to help strangers? Luann: i don't know! But she's been nice to me! she loves my hair! Bernice: She's boosting your ego so you'll feel safe while she takes your guy. Luann: You are wrong, Bernice. Bernice: I got an A on my abnormal psych final. So no, Luann, I'm right.

They’re probably both wrong. Luann is wrong because she trusts people who are outwardly kind. Bernice is wrong because she thinks a test score means she understands the world…
Kymberleigh about 9 years ago
At this rate, neither Luann nor Bernice is going to have a lifetime committed relationship.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
An a from studying? Or experience?-Usually , Bern gets to say “I told you so!” In these things…if only she could apply this stuff to her own self, then she’ll finally be one ferret short….

If Quill really loves Luann, then no amount of attempted “theft” will move him. If Quill allows himself to be “stolen” then his love was just a crush, and Luann is better off without him. It really is that simple.
Dreamdeer about 9 years ago
A hard lesson: personality will trump looks in any relationship worth having. Luann doesn’t have much. Pru has plenty. Hard not to love her. Luann, on the other hand…well, she’s not the reason I follow the cartoon. Can someone get any blander? She’s as flat as the paper she’s drawn on.
kenhense about 9 years ago
Berneice may be right. But that’s not abnormal psych.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
@ Luannfan: From what I was inferring from her comment, Kymberleigh isn’t speaking about their friendship in particular, but rather she believes these two wouldn’t be able to sustain relationships with others, perhaps even their “love life”, in her estimation…-At least, that’s what I had gathered from it…

She loves your hair, Luann? And this proves something??That silhouette is really leaning in…..body language says maybe Bernice is right, after all.

Quill and Pru are probably more suited for each other: affable, love the theater and want it to be their careers, independent. They are 18 and 19 so I don’t use true love in that age group very often.

What are the worst things anyone has done in this comic? I thought TJ blew up his truck for the insurance, but if so he’s gotten away with it. Tiffany has no ethics but she’s never fooled anyone has she? I bet the cartoonist has lots of dark possibilities he just rejects to keep things G-rated.

Bernice always was pretty much of a downer as a friend.

Where have I seen the smug friend look and the “Is not!/Is too!” exchange before?
live2read about 9 years ago
Even though Delta acted pompous toward Luann on the phone last year around Election Time, she at least still had the right idea about focusing on things besides guys—or fighting with your “best friend” over them.
Luanaphile about 9 years ago
Bernice is an introvert like many of us, and is unfairly suspicious of Prudence. I don’t know the theater field, but would it be a feather in Pru’s cap to have this production on her resume? The psychoanalyzing is a little over the top, but the Evans intend it as humor.
mapleman about 9 years ago
Look at Pru’s silouette in panel 1. No way Quill can pass up a body like that for Luann’s flatness.
PJCreatrix about 9 years ago
I know a couple of people who do this, who “love-bomb” everyone to break down their defences and make “friends”, so they can manipulate them. Bernice’s suspicion was my first thought too. Beware of lavish effusive compliments from someone who doesn’t know you.

Darn, I wish we’d gotten to study "guy stealing in Abnormal Psych too— but it was mostly about rats. Hmm…

I worked with a person just like that who was also very bossy to everyone. If someone made a mistake, she was right there to point it out although she had very little seniority. Watch your back.

Getting an A does not make you a shrink, Bern. You are still a long way from getting the barn door closed.

Here’s a radical idea – why not go the half-way ground between Luann’s trusting Pru unconditionally and Bernice’s instantaneous evaluation of Pru as having psychotic behavior. Why not do levels of trust with a guarded eye always kept open.
Also I would suggest to Bernice that she try some 200 level courses before coming to her snap judgments because every professional will tell you that it is nearly impossible to accurately judge a person mental condition from afar and through only one meeting. Honestly, Bernice just took another huge turn back into being arrogant and snotty after making some genuine progress.

indeed.

What year is it, 1952? Women fighting over a man? Are you kidding? Is Quill such a cipher that one woman can “take” him from another? If he’s that weak-minded Luann dodged a bullet.
Pipe Tobacco about 9 years ago
5Implausible…. Bernice would have to break the “4th Wall” to question the writing. I think that is unlikely. However, I would relish Bernice throwing her “psychological muscle” around with speculation about Mr. Gray. That could and would be very entertaining! Like Mordock alluded to, I am still hopeful (perhaps a bit less so since Prudence seems so “nice”) that Pru will steal away [bland] Quill forever and let Luann find a more interesting boyfriend (I still think it would be wildly entertaining to have her date “Jacque” or “Emo”).

Remember the look of horror Luann’s mom gave her when Luann was singing Pru’s praises? Pru is — at the very least completely narcissistic and manipulative. We shall see !
Sheila Hardie about 9 years ago
Pru is more his speed though. Shared interested, etc. So this would be a good way to get him out of the picture without breaking too many hearts.

Oh, newsflash for Bernice, just because you’re educated doesn’t mean you’re smart; maybe they don’t teach that in abnormal psychology
JayBluE about 9 years ago
Ha ha ha!!!
Pipe Tobacco about 9 years ago
Implausible…. yes, I remember the times you mention about the 4th wall being broken. Yet, I still think it is quite unlikely that Bernice will end up doing so. It just doesn’t seem like a logical fit for the story arc (at least at the moment).

Oh well then, she must be right.
Airman about 9 years ago
Poor Bernice is becoming Margo Phelps: glasses, dull hair style, sweater buttoned all the way up to a crew necked shirt, no curves, no make up, and obsessed with negative observations of her friends’ lives. For a moment I thought Piro was going to turn her on, but alas, dull as dirt. Bernice is too young to let herself become sexually invisible.
locake about 9 years ago
Bernice could be right or wrong, or somewhere in between. Luann should not just swallow up whatever Pru is offering without questioning it.

If Bern ever gets a chance to become friendlier with Piro, I sure hope she doesn’t try to turn him into a science project. It would spell the end of that relationship.
luann1212 about 9 years ago
Boy this blog reflects so many viewpoints on relationships that I think reflect how people’s own relationships are or were. Of course then I could be accused of being Bernice, psychoanalyzing everything. I just think that this is a young future counselor, fact-based person (which makes her perfect for that side of psychology, she just needs to get the human side down) reacting to what she sees as a threat to her best friend. Luann has her own opinion, and I think we will find it best. This will work out I predict. These are too close friends to let this get between them for real (I mean for real in the Luannverse). This is best for story.
luann1212 about 9 years ago
No it isn’t. Just because someone has an open mind and is willing to look at change in society means they are a liberal, or the smartest in the room. I am a progressive, but I don’t bring my politics into Luannverse, and I would hope we forget that stuff. We have enough other things to talk about and debate. WHy not just say passed a test in college and now she is the smartest in the room, definition of a young, college student?
Tdot_Babs about 9 years ago
I’ll be honest, I really feel bad for Luann. She really is trying to grow up and do the right thing, but this last few months has her being dealt one bad card after another that she can’t really get out of. She makes the mature choice to stay home and works with kids for the summer, but then Quill ends up meeting Prudence in New York. She voices her concerns about this to her best friend, only to get snarked at. So she tries to put her best foot forward in regard to Prudence, and in the end, gets shuffled to one side by her boyfriend, and then ends up stuck when said boyfriend ends up getting Prudence involved in this play. So now Luann is stuck with no real moral support since now her parents are having this girl stay with them and help them, and she can’t say or do anything about it because it’ll be a blow to her folks if she does. So she decides to be as positive and mature about it as she possibly can, and give Pru a fair shot, and now she’s being snarked at for THAT by the same best friend who gave her a sarcastic response when she brought Prudence up to her in the first place.
Whats Luann supposed to do exactly? Every move she makes seems to be the wrong one, or she gets stuck, and all fingers point to her when she does and she has no one to turn to and express her true feelings to, because she’s immature and whiny when she does. That’s not fair. A true friend is someone you can be yourself around and who won’t judge you. By that definition, Luann doesn’t have anyone right now she can turn to. I’d have reached my breaking point by now if I were in a situation like that. Luann really has a lot of inner strength here.
As for Quill, I’ll be disappointed if he ends up falling for Pru, because I was hoping he had a lot more integrity than that. But I’m glad Luann’s mom picked up on a potential problem. Here’s hoping she steps in if something comes of this.
Sisyphos about 9 years ago
Bernice is sooo wrong, and wrong-headed, too. But that doesn’t make Luann all right. I do , so far, like Pru, however.
