It will be interesting seeing what happens w Bernie over time. She for so long avoided risk by tightly following rules and plans, but now her life is becoming more freeform. Ultimately she needs that, but while she learns she has no idea how to weigh things, when to censor herself, etc. Most of the members of her past crowd are beyond that point, but people attain their life skills on their own timelines, and those vary considerably. Right now she and Luann have history that should continue their friendship, but each might need to grow in separate ways for a while before they understand each other well once again.

Argythree, excellent and perceptive summary. As an old fart in a long and excellent marriage i read the comments and sometimes happily think, “This person is perceptive enough that she or he probably also has a great relationship going, or will in the future.”, but the comments of others make me figure they might never have that joy and if they stick where they are then they will not even understand why, nor how they coukd have changed that. That part is rather sad, unless the people associate only with a narrow group of people or only one gender, or are asexual, but i do hope most other people can learn if they just decide to try, and i do think that most people do learn instead of glueing themselves in place.

“Quill gets deeply absorbed in whatever he’s doing for his career, and puts the personal side of his life on a back burner.”

Of course, he should sacrifice his future so that a young woman who, from all outward appearances, doesn’t have one can feel better about herself.

Now You BERN, Find the Campus Police and have them forcibly REMOVE Piro from school property and have him charged with trespassing since he’s obviously NOT a Student. Then have Tiffany expelled.

Of the relationships Greg and Karen Evans have shown over time from Dirk/Toni (“rescued” by Brad), newfound LuAnn/Quill/Prudence & Bernice/Piro?, Gunther/Rosa, Mrs. Berger/Mr. Gray, seems the only natural, compatible pairing is one we hardly ever see and they are Crystal and Knute. Knute’s character is so far out and flaky (male version of an airhead); Crystal’s character is so sensible and cynical that going with the “opposites attract” concept, Knute & Crystal really have an odd liking for each other.

They’re both wrong! Luann needs to find a career goal. She’s good with kids, can design sets, and probably has other skills and talents that haven’t come to light yet. Then maybe she won’t focus on the boyfriend so much. And the boyfriend? Since he grew up with distant parents who don’t seem to care where he goes or what he does, he’s terrible with intimacy. He’s more distant now than when he was in Australia. And by intimacy I don’t mean what goes on in the prop room!

I just don’t see this as mature (Quill) vs. immature (Luann). I think Luann lacks the confidence to accept and express her needs, which makes her defensive. Quill is playing the hyper-rational card, which is emotionally dense and even bullying.

Sally Margaret, Thank you for the education! I did not know that Emerson poem, Give All to Love, and had to look it up.This strip in recent days keeps having an old song, Talk to Me, go through my mind. Apologies for not finding the lyricist’s name in my search. Here are some of the lyrics:You’re always in a great big hurry, grab a kiss and off you scurry.Off to there, and there to who knows where.I’d give the world and all creation for a little conversation, Just a word or two, how are things, what’s new? Please talk to me, talk to me, talk to me, Your magical kiss can take me just so far.Talk to me, talk to me, talk to me, Don’t leave me like this, dangling from a star. You set me all aflame and it’s so pleasin’, It would be a shame if you were only teasin’.So, my love, before I go, turn the light way down low, And talk to me, talk to me, talk to me.Before people make assumptions, this song is usually sung by a male.I am hoping that both Luann and Quill have some introspection in the strip, and know that with the strip’s history they will, but i can not see their relationship continuing as a romance. They are kids and kids grow a lot, often in different ways and rates. If they do not think about it, though, then neither will learn for the future, so i suspect that they will think. Quill will see that his work passion is now his focus. Luann will see that she learned to love unselfishly by being fully supportive of Quill. I think she will continue that support by saying goodbye to him even though she wants him. When people look only at her having reached her exploding point they are missing the big picture: that for many months she placed the welfare and happiness of someone else before her own without having that kindness even recognized. Later in life when she is in a relationship where both people want to put the other person first for the sake of each other as their own greatest joy, too, she will find what love can be.I strongly agree that it is time for Luann to learn to also love herself and blossom. Many of the characters are doing that in ways which so well echo real life. It can be a challenging process, but with enough introspection it has wonderful results.

People tend to get what they work at, and what they work at tends to be what they value most. With kids that can be quite transient. Seeing where their lives are when they reach their 40s (which is — in my case was — a great decade because the people are usually still vibrantly healthy but also old enough to care far less how others assess them) coukd be an interesting gift at some point in the future.

It’s not entirely clear just what is bothering Bernice. Is she distressed that she can’t report Tiffany for violating a rule (since she violated it herself), or is she worried that her tightly run dorm will now fall apart with rules openly ignored (of course, Piro has been openly ignoring them for as long as we’ve seen him), or is she in fact “jealous” of Tiffany on account of the scarf incident? Insofar as we know, Piro just leaves scarves everywhere, rather than bestows them as tokens of affection. We haven’t see Piro express any interest whatsoever in either Bern or Tiff – just in their rooms, as places to crash.

    Sally Margaret,

May others here work toward having the good fortune you and i have had in our own marriages. May they not only find someone who wants to place them first, but have grown enough to have placing their loved ones first be the focus they are fortunate to have in their own lives. Of course, realistically, there will be some who never get it, who just respond to things instead of thinking about those difficulties and their underpinnings, and who further limit their reach, vision, and goals by assuming that all relationships must be as incomplete as theirs. Sadly, some of the older ones will never realize that careers continue and are successful also when that support system exists, not only when the career is placed first. So, here is mostly hoping for the young ones here to learn! I do not know about you but the L&Q arc has me appreciating and thanking my hubby even more!

I just don’t know what’s going on with her, and she won’t talk!!! How can I explain to her that there’s no reason for her to be angry, when she refuses to listen???”Pru: “There, there.” [Pours him a drink] “Tell me all about it. I’m listening.”And so it begins…

As i was working on something it struck me that while i certainly can hope that others find the kind of joy that is in our relationship, i do not have the right to assume that form of happiness is optimal for all. Some people are better suited to other foci and goals, and for them those are probably more rewarding. It does mean that they might know a lot less about successful relationships while knowing much more about something else, kind of like the way that an engineer might know a bit of biology but far less than an actual biologist, with the reverse also being true.

“Huge fight”? Looks more like Quill is saying “That b***h” is crazy! I don’t need this. I’m outta here.".

Seriously, though, the Evanses have created two real human dilemmas for these characters.

It turns out that Luann is not just fearful of losing Quill – she’s afraid losing hold of everything, including the attention of her family. Pru and The Fuse are holding everyone’s attention, and Luann feels she’s being taken taken for granted or ignored. Add her lack of direction, and she’s really lost. Sadly, at this point she has no one she can turn to; her “counselor” friend is no help, her clueless parents wouldn’t see what she’s upset about, and Pru IS the core of Luann’s worries. And she probably doesn’t want to hear what Dez’s cards have to say. (Maybe Toni, as someone suggested.)

And Miss Perfect is facing what happens when she and the real world don’t measure up to her rule-enforcing standards. Like Luann, she can’t tell anyone else her dilemma, as she would just get into worse trouble. (As a bonus, her fantasies about catching Piro’s attention seem to have crashed & burned.)

Will the Evanses give us story lines that work through these situations? Or will they just drop the whole thing, like Gunthie’s mommy-fixation? Only time — probably a LONG time — will tell.

@DavidHuieGreen“Nobody thought the Scarcrow had a brain until he got a diploma. That’s the way it is sometimes!”.It was clear throughout the movie that he was smart, just as the tin man was tender hearted and the cowardly lion was brace for facing his fears.

.The scary thing about respect based on a diploma is the same as respect due to fame. Sometimes it isn’t deserved or is given in a matter unrelated to the field of the diploma or music industry or movies..President Johnson is on tape wanting to avoid involvement in Vietnam but was persuaded by Robert McNamara, in part because HE had degrees. Looking back, Johnson would’ve been better off going with his gut ~ And so would a number of my formerly living neighbors.

Two not-yet-mature teenagers taking comfort in their long established “safe place”, both talking but neither listening. They should pause, and tell each other what they are hearing. I want feedback from another’s prospective. The monologs should become a dialog, but, personally I do not believe that they have yet reached that level. Right now they are stagnated on “me.” Dr. Lucy, of Peanuts, would charge 5 cents for that observation.

Ah, there was a part of me that was hoping you would be the researcher who was there studying synesthesia, Sally Margaret. Yeah, long shot, but they happen sometimes. (The best one we know involved some friends when we were adult students, about 1980. A visiting professor from China traveled to see the U.S. And dropped in on Steve’s parents. While there the next door neighbors visited and Lloyd mentioned that his uncle had been a missionary teacher in China. His uncle turned out to be the most important pre-college teacher in our friend’s life, and he was still alive and satient in a nursing home a few states away. They were able to reach him by phone and pupil and teacher were able to reconnect decades after parting ways.)

Seismic, part of my hubby’s undergrad education was at CalTech (There was a program then in which selected UU and CalTech students could utilize the opportunities at the other school.), and Richard Feynman was one of his profs. I will try to remember to ask him if synesthesia ever came up in their conversations but right now he’s getting a night’s rest.

What was the point of Frank and Nancy (or was it Fred and Kathy) opening up a gallery/night club, if we don’t get to see them using it?

Night-Gaunt, i think that Jamie Lee Curtis has had a biological daughter, but woukd have to chevk. That ability is rare to non-existant in XY females. A uterine malformation and some other considerations tend to exist which usually (always?) make procreation impossible. The gender continuum is a fiekd of study i have not recently read a great deal about so i will have to try to hit PubMed and look for interesting and relevant abstracts and free articles (or ones in journals we can access) if my eye and schedule permit, but i kind of doubt she is XY. I think she just has a number of her dad’s features and wears them well in a sexy so ewhat androgynous way. BTW, there is a subset of XY females who have what is deemed “hyper-female” characteristics. That XY subset has been described as being very like some Victoria’s Secret models in some biological/medical discussions.

David, i lost friends in Vietnam, too. Near the tail end of that by a couple of years was when i was about the age of Luann and Quill and donating time helping people my age readjust to returning. It taught me a lot about patience. There were many hardships that had to be talked around by those who had suffered them for a long while before the people felt safe enough to share their burdens. Some never coukd do so. To this day i can not understand how some people can not treat vets with respect because i have cried with them.

Brdshtt, i love your post that ends with>After all these years, we still call each other several times during the day, ask each other out for dates, and pull nutty pranks on each other. I am thankful for every day, for each day truly is a gift, a new canvas waiting for you to paint something on it. Don’t leave it blank. It is a beautiful, perceptive read. The wonderful love stories shaping their lives that multiple people have shared here have been a great gift to all, i think!

I wonder if that’s a Luann comic posted on the wall beneath the orange poster.
