There was an episode of “Adam Ruins Everything” where he explained that for a lot of people, living in an apartment is better than a house. For starters, any maintenance issue that can’t be solved with a plunger is the owner’s responsibility, not the tenants’.
Humm… funny, we just had this problem. Our 80 year old, cast-iron sewer pipes finally rotted out, olny 30 years beyond their design lifetime. $15,000 to replace the lot with plastic.
My monthly housing costs went down enormously once I owned. And renting is like throwing money into the toilet every month. When you own, you have equity, credit, a tax deduction, and something you can sell for a lot of money AND lower monthly costs. The only bad part is that you have to come up with the cash to buy the thing in the first place.
It seems kind of unfair to me: Once you have money, things are cheaper. When you don’t have money, you have no choice but to throw away $1500-$2000 every month, and probably moving costs every few years.
Senior Living Apartments (independent living to assisted living to memory care) in my area start at $5000/month. For that you get: small, 1 bedroom apartment w/ada grab bars; 3 meals/day; social programs; “HELP!” buttons; "Yes, I’m still alive button (push it by 11:00 AM or they send someone to check on you).
The first rule of smart home plumbing—know where the cut off valves in the house are. The second is have a plumber install cut off valves if you don’t have any or not enough.
Their mortgage should be just about paid off by now. Brad must be in his mid-twenties and they probably bought the house before his was born. Or, sell that cafe they own.
I have considered that as well. But a “nice hotel” (especially one with more than a single room) would cost about $6,000+ a month. An average one room hotel about $3,000. My mortgage for a 3 bedroom home with 2 baths is nearly paid off (and will onlt be taxes and insurance in a few years) but still is only about $1300 a month. Add in utilities and repairs and might average closer to $2,000-$2,500 a month. I realize some states have outrageous housing prices but then the hotels there are much higher also.

First cut off that water valve on the wall next to the toilet or the water damage costs will be so expensive, you will not be able to stay in a hotel.

I’ve heard living on a cruise ship is cheaper than a nursing home and you get to travel.

Frank needs to hurry up and buy a replacement toilet. Next year toilets are coming out with a remote which requires a password.

I told my wife, if you see the water rising, grab the plunger and plunge like a maniac.

What did Spock find in the toilet? The Captain’s log.

Why doesn’t he shut the water off? It looks as if it’s still flowing.

Frank should look into a Home Warranty service. If they can’t fix it, they replace……
Brdshtt Premium Member almost 5 years ago
If Frank went more than once every two weeks, the toilet wouldn’t plug up like that.

True. Bathroom problems are a big incentive for that kind of considerations.

There probably are cases where people bought more house than they needed, but for the vast majority of homeowners, this is not close to being true.

Uh, he might want to shut off the water flow to the toilet.
