If this is the level of humor we would see in a Brad and Toni arc, I’ll take Shannon. I’d rather be annoyed than bored.

Toni is plenty capable of saving herself. She doesn’t need to be rescued.

You upload all that stuff into the cloud so you won’t have to rescue it. If bad crap is happening near you, you already have your car loaded with what you want to save, grab your wife, and get the heck out of there.

As I recall, it was Brad that saved Toni when she fell off a ladder on the job. And she’s a trained firefighter, who should know how to save herself. Saving the stuff that Brad mentioned is important, since it cannot save itself.

No one will want to save TJ (who started the so-called wildfire), or the oily salad, or that…tall cabinet/short refrigerator.

Brad, the right answer is “the only treasure in this house, is you.”

This is a perfectly drawn example of the humor underlying this strip, well-drawn with the best friend delivering a punch line setup that made me laugh at Brad’s response even more. And Toni was gorgeous as usual. Being married as long as I have this makes so much sense to me. Best friends can call each other morons by the way, perfectly normal.

Listening to news on IDA and one guy stocked up on Lifejackets!! Now that is something I would never thought of!! I have all my documents scanned onto an external drive along with photos and other stuff.

Refreshing honesty. My wife would grab the dog, and I’d grab the cat; and we’d both grab the daughter(the one at home, anyway), important files, her computer, my Bible, and a hat. Not having a hat would be, like, wrong. We are not barbarians.

I would assume my wife is capable of getting to the car herself with her pile of important stuff.

The question was “What is the first thing you would save”. Is she a thing? And is this one of those questions that has no correct answer?

She’s a firefighter – she won’t need saving, in fact, she’ll likely be busy saving others!

She’s a firefighter, she knows how to save herself. That said, TJ still had the right answer.

She would be right along side helping, not standing around needing saving.

This is 2021. Is it unreasonable to think that she would be responsible for saving herself and not have to rely on Brad given their respective professions?

Or, better put, merge the two, prefacing the answer with, Outside of you? Well…

Brad only failed the comeback test in the last panel. His reply should have been, “No, as a fully-trained professional firefighter, I know that Toni would be able to take care of herself. I would never disrespect her by suggesting that she would need to be rescued by me.”

Fooey! Brad won a woman who knows how to save herself. Of course he’s thinking like part of a team!

Good rule of thumb for the answer is to always tell them what THEY want to hear. In other words, “You’d save her first.” If you’re trying for extra points, add “And I’d go back and die trying to save your shoes and purses!”

He should have said ’I’d save the kids first’, that would get the rumor mill started.

It’s kind of a no-win question because if you say ‘you’ you imply Toni can’t save herself, and given that she’s a fireman, that’s insulting.

He’s already saved her once. It almost cost him his life.

He actually paid her a compliment as he knows she can save herself.

I guess Brad thinks Toni, a firefighter, has the sense to get herself out.

This kind of sounds like the kind of comedic arguing that Firefighters Gage and DeSoto got into in-between rescue calls on “Emergency!” I’m almost expecting the Station 51 alarm to sound any minute.

Some of you people here are so incomprehensibly dense. When a woman asks that kind of question, they are not truly thinking of things, they are wanting to know that you would make sure they are safe, that you care enough about them, that when a disaster happens, you are going to think about them and their wellbeing first and foremost. Yes, she is a firefighter, but that does not mean that she does not want Brad to worry about her.

The Escape is: She’s not a Thing. And in Toni’s case, she’s self-rescuing.

It’s actually a trap. If he said “you” she gets mad and yells at him for thinking of her as a “thing”.

TJ is a smart guy!

We had a house fire earlier this year, it went quick! Getting my spouse to leave happened without thinking… When I saw the flames hit the ceiling I was shouting “outside outside outside” as I ran for the door, she was in the kitchen (closer to the door) and made it out before I did. My desk was next to the door & I picked up my laptop before right before I went barefoot into the snow. Picking up the laptop was luck… the backup to EVERYTHING was in my desk.Sadly our cat ran back to hide in the bedroom closet….

Years back I was in an area that had a wildfire heading towards it, we had time to throw stuff into the car…well my wife (at the time) tossed stuff into the car, I grabbed a shovel and went to see if I could help with the fire. A bomber dropped a load of retardant on the fire and the house was saved.

I know… too much seriousness for a Sunday funny :-)

Toni has always been strong and independent. She would probably have to save Brad.

Aside from anything else (and of course it would be a given that Toni, as a first responder, could rescue herself) I would think that two fire fighters in an area with frequent natural disasters would have “go bags” full of essential items ready to grab in case of the need for a quick evacuation from the house.

On Brad’s defense, he was asked “WHAT” he would save, not “WHO”! Toni is NOT a “WHAT”!

Toni can save herself, and Brad knows this. Saving the important papers (will, deed, etc., or the electronic copies thereof) is more important. Come to think of it, that stuff should be in a safe deposit box anyway….

Big time wrong answer there. However, if the house were on fire in a real case scenario, getting her to safety would be his FIRST AND ONLY concern and the same would occur under any real scenario….

And then he blew the comeback after T.J. said that: “No, she can save herself because she’s a badass firefighter.”

Toni’s question specifically limited Brad’s response to “things”.

I am with an adult who knows how to take care of herself. She has no inclination to have me take care of her unless absolutely necessary and visa versa.

Except, Toni is capable of getting herself out of there.

Pish. The right answer to TJ would have been: “But Toni would probably be the one saving ME as I try to save all this.”

It never occurred to Brad because he’s knows Toni is smart and strong enough to save herself. She’s a firefighter too. In fact, lord forbid a disaster heads their way, TJ will have to save everything because both Brad and Toni will be out on the line.

I feel like this is kind of a trick question. Brad knows that Toni is a firefighter, just as he is. I think his BEST answer is actually: “Do we have Shannon, or is she with her father?”

If there was one more panel Brad should say Toni is a “person” and not a “thing”.

Used to live in California where earthquakes often happen. There was a pretty decent one that occurred when my son was a baby. First thing I did was run into the back room where he was sleeping. My husband had already run outside…

They tried that on a TV show once, 3 married men listing the 5 things they’d save in a disaster. The idea was to see how far down the list "wife " was. Only one guy mentioned wife and that was at #3. One of the other guys said Dog as #4 and Dog food as #5

Because Brad knows that it is more likely that Toni would be saving Him.

Although TJ’s critique was correct, nonetheless I wish he’d bug out and move out. It’s between Brad and Toni, and none of his d*mned business!

One more comment…I know I’ve yacked quite a bit, but it breaks my heart to read about people who were hurt or died when it could have been prevented. First, it’s not safe to assume that a firefighter will never need help. Anyone caught off guard in a disaster may get trapped or injured or incapacitated and need help, no matter how good a firefighter, rescuer, doctor, or whatever they are. Second, sometimes even professionals do something wrong and pay a big price for it. I was so horrified to hear about a married couple who were volunteer firefighters who died last winter of carbon monoxide poisoning. With a simple CO detector, they could still be here today! (I was saved by having one a couple of years ago…)

I’ve never thought Bwad was very smart to begin with, but panel 1 is just a variation of, " Honey, do you think this dress makes me look fat??"

TJ needs to find somewhere else to live, so they can have a normal, private, married life!

Toni knows that Brad knows that, unless she’s in the throes of giving birth, she’s capable of taking care of herself. And somehow I think Toni would still be able to deliver the baby and get both of them out of the house.

Been there, done that. Twice, actually, from wildfires. For wife and I 1st answer was ‘pets’ then ‘stuff’. Luckily neither fire quite reached our house although the first one came within 1/2 mile and burning embers were landing in our yard as we drove away.

No, Toni is his trophy, treasure and toy TJ.

Well, he assumed she would still be able to walk and save herself.

The correct response to that is- “you aren’t a thing, which was the question of priority to save. Obviously, I would make sure you were safe first of all.”
