I had a Great Dane that lived to almost 10 years old. He weighed 172 pounds and was over 6ft tall standing up on his hind legs. You have to be very strict with a dog that’s going to be bigger than you when they are still a puppy. I treated him like a “mama dog” would have. If he got too rowdy inside the house I would roll him over and lie on him then growl. He became one of THE most known Danes in this area. I live in a rural part of the western North Carolina mountains. He knew how to walk backwards because he’d get into spots where he couldn’t turn around. I’d say…“Dude…back up” and he walked backwards! He also would go outdoors when company would drop by (he loved company!) and he would gently take their hand in his big old mouth and walk them to the house. This is a behavior I didn’t teach him. It was just something he did. A friend was Dane sitting him for me overnight and I had shown him where Vaughan’s treats were kept and he got two at 8:00 at night. He called me laughing like heck. He said he had been watching a movie and forgot about “Treat Time” until my boy came and grabbed him by the hand and pulled him off the couch. He then forgot where I had shown him where the treats were. He told me he actually looked at Vaughan and said, “Dude. Where does mommy keep the treats?” The Mighty Vo took him by the hand and walked him to the pantry where they were. I had always talked to him like a person and he understood language better than any dog I’ve been owned by. It took me 3 years to get over his passing and now I have an 8 pound bundle of energy.

Size-wise, Marm qualifies as a calf and, apparently, is just as graceful as one in a china shop!
