It’s a comedy staple, in fact, has turned up in numerous recordings, radio shows, movies and novels since the 1930’s. A classic version that made the rounds in the late 1950s under headlines on the order of “Saddened Bricklayer Asks for Sick Leave” https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=ruUzAAAAIBAJ&sjid=t-4HAAAAIBAJ&pg=4824%2C5420623 was attributed to an anonymous bricklayer in Barbados.
