    This type of depiction was ok when it first came out. Doesn’t make it right by today’s standards, but surely anyone reading a comic strip from an era when racism was prevalent should certainly expect to see the same depicted.

    This is translated accurately in the Spanish version: “negra.” But the addition of apostrophes makes it accurate too. “Violet’s undies are white. Rose’s are red,” etc.

    Note the “Fisher” in the last frame. According to Wikipedia, Bud Fisher authorized Al Smith to draw the strip under Bud’s supervision in 1932 and Al draw the comic for the next 48 years. But Al didn’t start signing his own name to the strip until 1954 when Bud died. So the “Fisher” in panel 4 only allows us to narrow the date to before 1954.
