Bamboo is fattening?

History lesson, boys and girls, relating to JP’s entry:

The bark of certain plants, including willow and spirea, was used since ancient times as a pain-killer because of the presence of salicylate-related chemicals. When the German chemist Felix Hoffmann synthesized acetylsalicylic acid based on research with compounds derived from spirea, the Bayer company created the name Aspirin, supposedly meaning ‘without spirea’.

(BTW, “aspirin” is a generic name in the U.S. but is still a Bayer trademark in much of the world. In the manner typical of academic feuds and corporate patent battles, details of this tale are disputed, but that’s my story and I’m sticking with it. Use at your own risk, just like aspirin.)
