This could be the ur-Nancy strip- it has so much subconscious weirdness going on. The first panel balloon that wants so much to be filled out, Ernie’s mark in the second panel, prominently reversed out of the top of the frame like a title card from the movie, [we’re just gonna skip over panel 3 altogether here, folks] and the gag in panel 4, which is as always in Nancy: no gag at all.
I see your point completely , I wonder though about panel one, could it be that the lady’s hat is so large Mr Bushmiller used the ballon in such a manner to emphasize the hat blocking Nancy’s view, and the ballon having to be stretched upward because of the large hat?
