I believe it to be very possible that the inspiration and the execution of this strip involved Ernie listening to recordings of Thelonious Monk’s music.
For me, those three panels read like a visual jazz resembling the kind (or type) of geometries found in some of the sounds of Monk’s music.
That reminds me of the metal rings they used to attach to the glasses to make milkshakes in the machines, although they took them off before they served them.

Ah youth….I can remember “upgrading” the firing device from a cap gun, to my dad’s ball peen hammer.
