Nancy has an illiterate dog.

How did the dog learn to write. Reminds of the little boy who wanted to trade his baby sister for a bike.
He wants a squirrel to chase. Since he can only speak Dog, he thinks squirrel through his nose, hence Skwerl. I think its cute.
Okay, let’s be realistic… Sluggo painted the sign as a prank. He intentionally (likely) misspelled squirrel to give it more “realism”, then positioned the sign and hid when he saw Nancy coming.
