I think mostly there are three factors at work:

    1) As you get older, you notice a higher percentage of the bad things that were already going on (starting when you’re a kid, and your parents gradually shield you less and less from what’s happening in the world).

    2) Certain “bad news” statistics can increase in gross numbers, but decrease in per capita incidence, due to the overall population increase – and what you see is the gross numbers.

    3) In general, as people get older, they become less willing (or perhaps less able) to adapt to change, so they tend to see change as negative, even if said change is basically benign (or even a plus for most people).

I’m almost 41, and I just do my best to keep an open mind; I try not to judge, since no one has appointed me to the bench.

My granddaughter called me today and needed an interview about me for black history month (since I graduated HS in 55) and I told her what I remembered -including that my parents did not like a friendship with a black girl in my gym class, but I also told her that I do not like any activist groups (including NOW or AARP) and consider them a bunch of troublemakers as I always have. I am a senior woman and prefer to be unemployed than accept membership in such.
