Any sufficiently complex system has point(s), impossible to predict, where the system will not resolve itself. The human version has the good design that certain needs have an overriding priority at some point.
There are still many photos (really old, but not the best ones) that I never scanned. I did not even have a working camera during childhood of some of my kids in the 60s. I have scanned older ones because they were more professional than some of my kids at the zoo etc or family parties where there was no editing. Young people cannot imagine the difficulties that we have with boxes of photos from so many decades ago!
