Reminds me of a cartoon (probably a “Far Side”) where two dogs, both wearing hats and glasses (you could tell the father dog by the fedora), chided their son, who was hiding behind Mom, “Stop being so shy! Now get over there and smell the Johnsons’ butts!”

For a dog it would be impolite NOT to smell the other dog’s rear.
