They allowed a lot more off-color content then. Literally! The early color TVs had to be adjusted for each show. Even then, the color would be off for the commercials.
First color TV I ever saw was in 1958 at a Russian exposition in NYC! My uncle had a screen cover that had blue on top and green on the bottom for viewing which was rather stupid.
Back in the early 50’s when my sister and I were4 and 5, we would sometimes turn the tv on really early around 6 am and wait for the broadcast day to begin. This included a a long test tone during which my sister and I would sit there with our German Shepherd and we would howl until the dog joined in. Boy, our folks sure enjoyed getting woke that way.

Who else remembers vertical & horizontal hold, red and green hue adjustments, and watching the screen shrink to a white dot when you turned it off?
