As a substitute teacher I had students who didn’t get the problem. I had them relate to something they cared about. One boy baseball stats and another horses. Worked for both of them.
That problem can’t solved unless there is more information given, so Grandpa’s “How many…” sentence would have to fill that information in. For instance “How many tacos and enchiladas are on Platter B if Platter A has six tacos and four enchiladas.”
