The references to orange aren’t proof of “anger toward colors other than green.” These patriotic green Irishmen are rejecting the Orange Order of Northern Irish protestants who sympathize with the British against the independence of a Catholic Ireland. I’m not sure whether McNamara’s rejection of “yellow journalism” stems from the same source, but it might.

As wwwenger observed the antipathy to things orange is related to the ‘Orange Order’ they take their name from protestant King William III of Orange (often shortened to ‘King Billy’) the Green or republican factions taking their cue from the deposed catholic King James II. its a historical feud that has carried on for over three hundred years.
