rj: c'mon, verne....I Really want to learn chess. verne: you'll just invent your own rules and make a mockery of the game. rj: I won't, I promise. cross my heart, hope to die, stick a twinkie in my eye. not my mouth-my eye. where I can't eat it. verne: You are serious... verne: fine. don't expect to win your first time. it's a difficult game that takes years to... rj: Check mate. verne: I hate my life.

See, this is basically what happened with me when I taught my younger brother how to play chess; he won. I continued to play chess for a bit longer, but after about middle school, I just gave up entirely.

Limedog and Verne. Your opponents just had better instructor than you had.

I’m pretty sure it must have been four moves – it’s called “Scholar’s mate” and allows checkmate in only four moves if not defended against. It’s pretty common for chess noobs to get schooled this way (I assume that’s where the name comes from) – and to try it on each other.

Perhaps I was wrong – I just found a series called fools mate that can allow black to win in only 3 moves if white plays very badly – hadn’t seen that before.

Speaking of fools, I see I “discovered” fools mate just a couple posts past where david42 mentioned it. That’s what comes from not reading the whole thread.
