I never had marbles to play with as a kid so I never understood what the big deal about playing with marbles was. I mean I just thought they were for rolling. My mid teens I got a little table top pool table that used marbles as the billiard balls and spring powered “cue” sticks, but that was just using marbles in place of because of their size to me. It wasn’t until I was in my late teens that I learned about the game. And by that time I was too old to be interested in playing the game of marbles.
We don’t see kids playing with marbles any more. They were all the rage until at least the mid-’80s. I remember having a big basket full of them – many won in contests of skill in dusty playgrounds.
Here in Europe they call kids the “indoor generation.” Between fearful parents and new gadgets, the kids spend all their time indoors, glued to various screens.
I worked at a place that sold topsoil, among other things. The mound they took it from seemed to consist of dug-up yards. I used to go walk around on it and look for marbles. I eventually found a couple dozen of them, including a shooter.

Here at the Senior Center we play Chinese checkers. They do not use marbles anymore but colored pegs. Still fun though!!
