“Three responses: (1) I believe in the original Sunday strips, they WERE blue. (2) Just as there are different colored birds in my area, different colored birds are not out of the ordinary. (3) At this point, Schulz had not made any bird a regular character. He was exploring options but had not finalized his bird character. Woodstock first appeared in 1967, the year after this particular strip.”
In addition, if you look at the birds as they’ve appeared over the past few months, they’ve evolved into being more like the bird we know as Woodstock, i.e., the first birds did not have the ruffled top of the head and they had an upper and lower beak as opposed to the one you see above.
Although Woodstock officially made his debut in 1967, he was not named until 1970.
It’s funny…. Schulz started out with a bunch of realistic looking birds, then gradually cartoonized them, leading to one bird, later named Woodstock… then later he added more little yellow birds (Conrad, Bill, Olivier, Harriet…). So Snoopy got used to having a bird posse…

Someone has probably already brought this up, but why are the birds blue? I remember them being yellow in the original strips.
