And add “I’m like” after every three words.

“You know,” and “like” were once the biggies. Now it’s beginning every third sentence with “So.”

Toastmasters have an “Um-counter” during some of their meetings: someone who actually keeps track of when people say “um” or “you know” or the like when they speak. The time I took my daughter there (she loves public speaking and I thought I would show it to her to see if it would be something she might want to do when she was older) she rated the fewest amount of “ums”. She was 9. The Chairwoman invited her to join when she was 16 (but said that she could come be a guest any time she wanted to until then).

Back in my late teens my then-boyfriend and I realized that we were saying “y’know” so much as to be practically unintelligible. We started a concerted effort to stop and were surprised at how hard it was. What it accomplished, however, was a marshaling of thought before speaking and from there a realization of how little people did that before speaking.

My daughter-in-law is a teacher. Primarily history, but she also teaches English. Nobody ever speaks; the all “go.” as in “So she goes to her friends, ‘I don’t think this class is so hard.’”

I think that the worst is the combination “Like, You know”. Every time someone said “you know” while talking to me, I would say quickly “NO, I don’t know”. Pretty soon they would realize just how many times they were saying it.

Hello! I hope you have been doing well. Here is a song for you:

I dedicated this song to Linda because I have no doubt she took the stairway to heaven.

I hope you have the most marvellous weekend. You take care. I’ll be thinking about you!

    ♥♥♥
