I think school nurses don’t perform surgery. Medical students on the other hand, if you ask me…

Hopefully she doesn’t need to check for a hernia.

He’s probably too young to need a prostrate exam.

    Maybe she’ll recommend a good 5¢ psychiatrist.

School nurses weren’t allowed to do much besides take your temperature and give you a bandaid.

Our “school nurse” isn’t even a real nurse, LP or RN. It’s not required. If you are sick in school, she points to the bathroom and then a cot. She’ll call your home, if anyone is free to pick you up. We do have a defibrillator thought.

My sister got hurt at school one day, and the school nurse called my mother. This is what she said (the names have been changed to protect the guilty):

“Hello, Mrs. (inNYC), this is Nurse Ratchett at Crushed Dreams Elementary School. There’s been a little accident with your daughter, but don’t worry, we’ve got the bleeding under control.”

Be brave, Charlie Brown! You might get a lollipop at the end. Or a sticker.

I always get a bit nervous every time I go to donate blood even though I’ve done it 10 times.

    xxx

Charlie Brown is suffering from anxiety, which as far as I can tell/remember, was not treated in any way back then other than telling kids to “buck up” and whatnot. I just came to the realization that when I read these strips as a kid, I thought the way Charlie Brown looked at the world was normal and natural. I fretted needlessly over things, tried like crazy not to draw attention to myself to avoid ridicule, and treated my crushes on girls with utter panic. I got over these things eventually, but that last one only very recently and with tremendous effort. I try not to dwell overmuch on the past, but it’s hard to ignore so much precious time wasted. My life is great right now, but I’d have thought it all an impossible dream as little as 5 years ago.

So why is CB at the “nurse’s” office? Is he sick of school?

I remember when we did the play “Up The Down Staircase” at school. The school nurse initially seemed a "health nut, always talking about the importance of a hot breakfast. Until one scene where she vented about how she’s not even allowed to give a kid a bandaid or an aspirin. All she can do is give them a cup of tea and send out memos about “Poor nutrition is frequently the cause of poor grades.”
