Seems like Sally Brown doesn’t know how to read a calendar. (The next holiday to ask if it has arrived yet is Valentine’s Day. Answer: not yet; in four months.)

What’s it to you, Sally? You always spend Halloween sitting with Linus in his pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin anyway!

Cut him some slack, Sally. It’s not his fault you lose track of holidays.

What a loving sister! A big brother always takes the blame.

About Sally’s age (which is about 5 or 6), in the 60s, I was taught that dreadful prayer, “Now I lay me down to sleep.” When I got to the part “if I should die before I wake,” my child’s mind came to the conclusion that it was entirely possible! So I remember praying repeatedly and desperately to live from one holiday to the next. When you’re 5, there are oceans of time between Halloween and Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving and Christmas, or any of those and your birthday.

Now as an adult and a Christian, I realise how sad it was to teach kids this outdated 19th century prayer. Yes, kids often did die of illnesses we cure without a second thought today: colds, flu, measles, chicken pox, etc. And they died at home. But no one ever asked me if I understood it. At that time, though my parents went through the motions of Sunday school and saying grace, they weren’t what you’d call dedicated Christians.

Despite yesterday’s strip, Beethoven’s birthday is today.

Google has a fun puzzle doodle to celebrate Beethoven’s birthday (a day late, maybe)

Yep. You are hated for telling the truth and you are hated for telling lies.

    You can’t win.

Thank you for missing my point entirely. It was about being terrified I could die in my sleep at any moment, thus missing out on the fun and excitement of any special day. Not one word about any gifts did I say. I was talking about being scared to go to sleep, and begging God to let me live to the next seasonal milestone.

I am glad that I learned that God doesn’t let little kids die in their sleep just like that. You didn’t grow up at my side, you have no idea what you paint as so “positive” was a very bad family dynamic, which if you had ever read any of my comments over the years I’ve contributed here, you might have picked up.

But then we’re all fallible humans, aren’t we? I learned that very young, too.
