All across Colorado at this time of year, millennials are lying down on top of deserted baseball mounds at night, passing around a ‘fatty’, and watching the skies for Ancient Aliens.
My son’s YMCA day camp has a large recreation field near my house, and all summer long it’s filled with lots of kids playing for several hours each weekday. Two weeks ago it was still full of kids, now they’re back in school and it’s just empty. Kind of the same sad feeling, another summer gone past.
Charles reminds me so much of a deacon I once knew. He too was the manager/pitcher of our church softball team. Whereas his managerial duties were properly done, his pitching left much to be desired. We were in the slow pitch league and the pitch was supposed to have a lot of arc on it to make it harder to hit. But, our deacon pitcher chose to use flat lobs that the opposition teams just loved hitting out of the park. Despite having a young healthy team, we congratulated a lot of teams during deacon’s tenure. We really got to work on our humility. And we really did have fun playing and well remember our own home runs made. But, better pitching would’ve helped.
Having watched the kids at the Little League World Series tournament, this strip is more poignant. Well done to all the players and coaches and remarkably well-behaved parents.

The mound won games because the other teams used the same mound.

This is a strip from the days when the baseball season ended at a reasonable time instead of lasting for eternity.

It’s a long, lonely year for one little baseball mound.

The mound will be left alone to think dirty thoughts that will be compacted by the coming winters snow.

There is indeed something sad about an empty, quiet playing field.

Being a Dodgers fan and knowing that Sparky was a Giants fan, I really enjoy seeing this published today.

Regret that the season is over, or regret that the mound will be seeing Charlie Brown again next year?

Sounds like a Tiger’s game.
