Marigold: And what will come of the standardized test you look last week? Phoebe: Nothing'll happen for a while, then one say we'll find out about our percentiles. Marigold: What is a percentile? Phoebe: Dunno. It's, like, a number of some kind. Marigold: Just so long as you are learning.

I remember learning about percentiles for standardized testing in 2nd or 3rd grade.
It made no sense to me at the time that 99th was the highest percentile. I wanted to score 100% and I thought 99 was not good enough. I was also troubled by the lack of gold star stickers.

I remember having to take ever increasing numbers of such tests. Eventually I realized that the results didn’t affect me personally, so I started answering at random. Other students in my classes did the same. Sometime later I heard about how US students fell far behind other countries at right around that grade level.

I did the same thing as Mythfan. It amazes me that anyone puts any trust in the results of those tests.
