I think we could potentially get scientific proof of fate. It comes with the answer to the question of whether the universe is deterministic.

Another strip that feels very Calvin and Hobbes-like.

You’re friends with a unicorn, Phoebe. I’m pretty sure you’ve already got your answer.

Good question. Do we travel down a pre-existing time stream and fate has everything set for us (“It was meant to happen!”), or do we create our future and only a time stream of the past flows away behind us?

Or is time an illusion? Google that question and learn something new.

Do we have to ponder that question?

    I’m a believer in free will …

(This is proof that I don’t have it, since our society requires us to believe in free will)

… so I’m also a believer that fate is the shape of the world you’re in, and choice is the path you take in that world.

Phoebe, you were fated to be on that spot from the moment of the big bang. All is inevitable.

Was I fated to discover this comic? Was I fated to even become attached to Dakota somehow? The universe has a strange sense of humor.

There is fate (as in a universal plan). But that works along with free will (how we choose to fit into that plan). It’s a complicated relationship.

If one has no idea what the universal plan is or doesn’t believe in a universal plan, that’s part of free will. But one hasn’t been paying proper attention.

Part of the universal plan is “don’t destroy the planet you live on”. We pretty much stinketh at that one. “Love your neighbor and your enemies.” “Be good to each other.” (Yes, Bill and Ted had it right.) “Don’t be selfish or arrogant.” “Listen more than you talk. That’s the key to learning and gaining experience.” “Exercise common sense, regularly, even when you don’t like it.” “Don’t be gullible and naive. A PHD means more knowledge; it doesn’t necessarily mean that knowledge is right.” “Eat properly and exercise regularly.” “Science changes its mind daily.” “Stop being an idiot.”

When it comes to the human species, that last one is a doozy. We seem to never get that one quite right. ; )

Phoebe and Marigold are but pawns in the hands of fate, also known as Dana Simpson.

I feted fate and laughed in glee, then came the day fate defeated me…

Was it fate that allowed Phoebe to wear flip flops or did her creator just fancy drawing her like this?

I don’t believe in fate, because I don’t like the idea of not being in control of my own life. :)
