If I recall, “cole” is another word for “cabbage.”

“Coleslaw” comes from the Dutch words for “cabbage salad.”

It’s actually “kohl slaw”. Made from that black eyeliner that the ancient Egyptians wore.

I like the slaw from KFC. I found a recipe for it, and it’s very tasty. I make a batch almost every week.

I generally skip the salad and eat another burger.BTW, Opal incorrectly referred to Earl’s cooking technique as “barbecue.” Technically, Earl is grilling.

In the south, it is simply referred to as “slaw.”

The “cole” in “coleslaw” comes from the same root as “kale.” Here’s the entry in my Web site:http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/coldslaw.html

Google it; Earl’s pronunciation was used in mid-19th century England, but apparently didn’t catch on. And if they were going to continue arguing, Opal would no doubt be yelling at him to explain what “shmalad” is, before she goes trying to make any.

Best coleslaw in the world can be found at Ben’s Kosher Deli, located in (among other places) New York and Florida.

In the South my DH grew up in, no veggie was ever served any way but cooked to death. They never heard of fresh salad.

Thanks, Templo; I already knew that the German word for cabbage is “kohl.”Makes sense that the spelling was simplified for English.

So where does kohlrabi come in. Related to cabbage, but so is lettuce, califlower, etc.
