Earl lived vicariously through a You Tube video.

I haven’t walked across America, but I’ve taken a few “walks” using Google Maps street view. Does that count?

I recall some fellow who accomplished the feat of walking across America — doing it walking backwards.

I have found that watching people scratch lottery tickets on YouTube is sometimes as satisfying as doing it myself. And costs a lot less.

My friend, about Earl’s and my age, has biked across America. and also biked from Canada to Mexico, as well as various places in Europe. His wife drives the support van.
