Never had an automatic dog. Ours was pretty much manual…
Not the place you want the animals to be watered at. Part of keeping it clean is to put materials that kill bacteria. Keep the lid down and the water bowl full.

We just have a big water bowl next to the kitchen counter.
Of course dogs only drink clean water outdoors.
