Good job, Poncho!

Make the music Justin Beiber, and youd have something Pocho.
On second thought, Chazz probably uses Justin Beiber’s songs as a dog whistle
COWBOY7 about 14 years ago
That would drive me crazy, too.

Poncho, don’t listen to them,it’s a Barry Manilow song and Chazz probably knows all the words to it.

Barry is the man!
Olfarto about 14 years ago
Is that what they meant by “The Magic of Monilow”?
cleokaya about 14 years ago
Great @*%#, just what I didn’t need implanted in my brain. Give Poncho the remote and make Barry go away.

You could put Poncho in his dog crate for a while in the laundry room or something.

Ironically, that’s one song that Barry Manilow DIDN’T write. It was by a guy named Bruce Johnston.
It IS a song that would drive me from the room, though. I prefer “Mandy” (the name, at least, was Manilow’s beloved beagle) and “Copacabana” (maximum cheese, but great fun to sing along with).

Hey, what’s wrong with Barry? Geez! Though I must agree with cleo, I don’t really want that song ringing in my head all day! THANKS A LOT PAUL! :-D

My favorite panel is the 7th with the storm cloud over a truly miserable looking Chaz and that terrible smirk on Poncho’s face - priceless!

Trouble is, since no-one over six (mental age at least) listens to him, no-one would recognize the lyrics, so we wouldn’t get the joke…

I can’t believe I’m arguing this, but… Barry’s beagle, at least at the time Mandy was a hit, was named Bagel. It was on the back of one of the records. “Mandy” was originally “Brandy,” but had an obvious conflict with another song. Why I can remember this stuff but forget where I put my keys… Must be being 52.

That’s like 3 strips in 1
mrsullenbeauty about 14 years ago
Ha ha, funny to contrast this little domestic playlet with the relative honeymoon period occuring in the daily strip.

HelmetHead, I knew that at SOME point Manilow had a beagel named Bagel, but I’m pretty sure that “Mandy” was originally inspired by a (previous?) dog. If that earlier dog’s name was Brandy rather than Mandy (the conflict was probably with “Brandy” by Looking Glass), that would accommodate both scenarios.
Edit: A quick Google search suggests that, while the song’s “It’s about a dog” inspiration has a long history, it may be apocryphal. It works, though…
