   There is a play, “Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some)”, which starts to do a version of “Rudolph”, but for copyright reasons changes it to the story of “Gustav, the Green-Nosed ReinGoat”.

   He is exhibiting two-dimensional thinking. It doesn’t take nearly as long to “leave a star system” if one travels “up” or “down”, that is, perpendicular to the plane of planetary revolution, rather than “out”, that is, remaining within that plane.

   Matthew 6:6 is not an injunction against all public prayer. If it were, Jesus broke that injunction himself a number of times. Just looking at Matthew 6:5 makes it clear that Matthew 6:6 is about praying in public for the purpose of appearances and glorifying oneself instead of for the purpose of a communal celebration and acknowledgment of God’s glory. In a similar vein, Jesus did not contradict himself on the issue of doing good deeds, where he says we should do them where people can see them for God’s glory (Matthew 5:16), but also do them where people can’t see them (Matthew 6:1-4). It’s not really about what we do, but about why. It may very well be that many of the public prayers take place in government meetings for the wrong reasons, with the wrong attitude, and that should be discouraged. But, Jesus’ words should not be used in an argument against all public prayer.
