In 2016, the federal debt was 105% of G.D.P. In 2020, it had grown to 126%. That is a 20% increase over four years, thanks to the spending that Trump asked for, and the Congress agreed to, the tax cuts of 2017, and then the spending for the pandemic, by Trump & Congress.
As we were well into an economic recovery in those years, Trump & Congress should’ve raised taxes to slow debt growth. doing the opposite, and then having to spend for a national emergency, has made our debt situation much, much worse.
If you’re referring to Trump, he took a thriving economy and drove it into the ground while ballooning the debt. President Biden and the Democratic Congress spent two years getting the economy back on track.
Besides the economy, Trump stole thousands of our documents, set a mob on the Capitol to steal our votes, violated the law to strong-arm Ukraine for his own political gain, obstructed justice, and colluded with Russia, which helped him win election the first time.
His last year in office saw protests in many cities that led to violent riots, which he “handled” by sending in federal troops. We also saw, as today, wildfires in California, where Trump refused to help, and terrible Covid outbreaks, where Trump wouldn’t send in the necessary supplies, forcing different states to bid for them, instead.
Okay, without a debt ceiling, what stops a Congress and president to cut taxes and then spend like drunken sailors, as they did in Trump’s first term?
By the way, Congress passes budgets, but the executive branch does indeed present a budget, which Congress (even when it says that it’s “D.O.A.”) relies on to formulate its own budget. In addition, the executive branch has wiggle room within the budget passed by Congress.
I appreciate your reply. I hope that you can tell that I obviously enjoy the strip. My wife works in a supermarket. I sometimes text her your strip when it seems apropos—usually in re annoying customers.
In my humble opinion, I find Penny, Todd, Shelby, & April Bloom (now that she is a manager) more interesting, and April Bloom to be more Zen. Tabby does have equanimity, but she enjoys others problems too much, in my even humbler opinion.
Concept borrowed from the early chapters of Rick Riorden’s first Percy Jackson novel.
