Danae pretty much has to have a mother, although I don’t recall her ever being shown in the strip. Dead, divorced, deserted the family, who knows?

Caulfield DOES read what he wants to read. He reads the summer reading before, during, and/or after that. Otherwise, Mrs. Olsen would have a legitimate reason to hassle him. (It’s part of the game they play.)

Anubis was the Egyptian god of the afterlife, and was usually depicted with as a man with a dog’s head.

    Khafre was an Egyptian pharaoh.

They’re dogs but bad dogs, thus they are the mummy’s curs (a cur is a mongrel dog), making a play on the phrase “the mummy’s curse”.

According to Wikipedia and Topps (their vendor), Wacky Packages are still around. Mark draws for them. The ones Topps doesn’t want are, at least occasionally, posted here at “Off The Mark”. I’m sure this is one Topps declined.

Making a couple guesses as far as what you’re confused about. First, “Mom’s Ho-Made Soups” = “Mom’s Home-Made Soups”. Second, while I suspect the pipe is going from the soup kettle to the customers’ soup bowls or the canning line, I suppose it’s possible the pipe is bringing soup in, not taking soup out.

The exceptions do not prove the rule. While some artists, like the ones you mentioned, got rich off their art, most artists have side gigs to support themselves while they’re making their art, or have regular jobs with their art essentially being a side gig. Possibly the most famous of these was the early 20th century composer Charles Ives. He made his living as an insurance company executive, because his compositions were largely ignored during his lifetime.

They’re (presumably) Mr. and Mrs. Grim Reaper. Why don’t they make the phone battery die?

This kind of reminds me of a story my Dad used to tell. One of the secretaries where he worked was ice-skating on a pond in a city park when some blowhard challenged her to a race. The only problem was, she had competed in the Winter Olympics for South Korea in speed skating. She didn’t medal or anything, but even a decade or so later, she was still able to smoke a random guy.
