Honoring teachers, nurses, etc. On Memorial Day, I also remember those who serve and have died in the line of service – especially teachers who die protecting their students in school shootings, fire fighters, health care workers (particularly those who died during the Covid crisis), law enforcement, you get the idea. When I led congregations, I included them in Memorial Day prayers. But especially teachers – that isn’t in the job description. Risk is inherent to police, fire, and military service.
Give me a break…. I’ve lived in the PNW all my life. We may not get hurricanes, but we do get strong windstorms (especially on the coast) and we’ve sunk a couple bridges because of it. And floods, mudslides, landslides and droughts and wildfires. And yes, exploding mountains. I have a jar of ash collected from my deck after 3 Mt. St. Helens eruptions. And we have tsunami evacuation routes posted on the roads near the ocean. But I wouldn’t live anywhere else.
I don’t think the clowns scare the bulls. Clowns distract them, so the bulls chase the clowns, drawing them away from the performer who is on the ground. clowns better be able to run, too.
For the church, perhaps, but the officiant doesn’t count as one of the witnesses for the legal paperwork in the state of Washington. (writing as someone who DOES officiate at weddings in Washington state)
